Beverly Howard, the 53-year-old former director of dining services for a school district in Connecticut, on April 13 pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly $350,000 from her employer and giving the money to Foxwoods.
The 67-year-old former head of the Lithuanian Club in Waterbury, CT was sentenced April 8 to one year in prison for stealing cash intended for the purchase of gravestones and cemetery plots. John Veturis used checks from the club’s account at Mohegan Sun Casino, where authorities say he lost nearly $52,000.
Dennis Butler, a 68-year-old former church secretary, was sentenced April 12 to three years in prison for embezzling $200,000 from the church due to a gambling addiction.
A 58-year-old former town clerk from upstate New York, Linda Verhow, was arrested after she admitted embezzling more than $50,000 from the town to finance a gambling addiction.
The former director of Pottsdown Parks and Recreation in Pennsylvania was sentenced to probation for stealing more than $15,000 from the Fourth of July committee. John Michael Reber, 47, had a $500-per-week lottery habit. He has repaid the stolen funds.
Scott Harvey Parisian, formerly the treasurer of a Canadian social fund, pleaded guilty April 12 to stealing $30,000 (CAD) from the fund to keep up his gambling addiction.
A 33-year-old Australian business manager, Justin Peter Nicholas, was sentenced to 5 years in prison for embezzling nearly $3 million (AUD) to finance his gambling addiction.
Sherrell Mitchell, a former union treasurer from St. Louis, was sentenced April 8 to probation, home detention, and community service for embezzling $110,000 to spend at a local casino.
Former cowboy Francis James Loneragan was sentenced April 9 to three years in an Australian prison for selling $400,000 (AUD) worth of cows that belonged to his boss. All told Loneragan embezzled some 799 heads of cattle to finance a gambling addiction.
Rosemary Barath, formerly a bookkeeper for the city of Merrillville, IN, has repaid $200,000 of the $300,000 she embezzled due to her gambling addiction.

Also this week: A 32-year-old Indian man committed suicide on April 13 after losing a large sports bet, a man fell to his death from the parking garage of Caesars Atlantic City in an apparent suicide, and the U.S. attorney in St. Louis issued a warning that is not at all news to the readers of this here blog.
